The music therapy session structure is completely dependent on the clients goals. For example, a non-verbal client whose goal is to develop communication tools, would have a heavily music-centered session.

However, a client who is verbal and has goals to reduce anxiety, may have a balance of verbal discussion and song sharing.

Individual sessions are one-to-one sessions between the therapist and client. The session usually includes a check-in and exercises to work on goals.

The session may include:

  • Verbal discussion
  • Sharing music
  • Writing music
  • Music-based mindfulness exercises
  • Analyzing lyrics

Exercises and interventions that take place in the session are dependent on the clients goals and needs.

Group sessions typically involve 2-8 individuals that meet on a consistent basis either in-person or online.  The group session involves sharing challenges and supporting others in the group.
